The Challenge

  • Overhaul of the organization and structure of the Organization's existing website, or UX design for a new website

  • Clear map of website’s structure (sitemap) with wireframes to accompany the layout; wireframes may include homepage, section pages, content detail pages, and form pages

  • Flowcharts or specifications for the interactive features of the website

  • A summary of the system components that will need to be styled for the site

The Outcome

The Tobacco Free Alliance of Virginia was in need of a redesign for a more engaging website to allow users to stay and explore on the site longer, to find information, and a way to join a meeting.  As a team of 2 UX Designers, we created:

  • On the landing page provided content that clearly states mission, vision, goal.

  • Build in clear Calls to Action (CTA) button for newsletter and membership.

  • Clear call to action for signup form.

  • Emphasize imagery connect people to the site that would reflect diversity and inclusion with regard to race, lifestyle.

The Client

TFAV is dedicated to changing policies, systems and environments to promote a tobacco free, healthy Virginia. Through a collaborative effort to enact this plan, Virginia tobacco control stakeholders can leverage resources to raise awareness, provide comprehensive programs, improve health equity, and strengthen tobacco control policies throughout Virginia. These efforts are critical to improving the health of the Commonwealth by significantly decreasing tobacco-related morbidity, mortality, and economic costs.

Solution

"How Might We clarify information on vision and mission?"

Stakeholder Interview #1

We conducted a stakeholder's interview to get a better understanding of who TFAV is and what exactly a coalition does.

Finding the Users

"I'm hearing back that people don't use the site, which kind of speaks to the issue." - Stakeholder

This was the first problem we encountered.  Finding actual users of the website and conducting interviews.  I spoke back with the stakeholder in regards to the importance of conducting some interviews to really get down to the problems and opinions of the users.  With this research, we would be able to redesign a website to increase that engaement which was one of the business goals.

"How Might We increase audience engagement?"

Stakeholder Interview #2 & 3

Sometimes you just need more information and a better understanding of what exactly are the business needs and goals.  So we conducted an interview with two more stakeholders.  We needed to relay the importance of qualitative research for this project and being able to meet the business goals.

"How Might We provide potential members with a clearer path to membership?"

No one would use this site unless pushed.  Lack of knowledge about it

It doesn't look like I belong.  It feels private.  It is frustrating because I would have to email them.

There is no branding.  It doesn't scream I want to poke around.

Sketches

Taking the research from the stakeholder and user interviews, it was time to start brainstorming some new ideas for this website.  My first tool of choice is always pen and paper.

Wireframes

TFAV Home Page.png

A clear mission statement front and center so a user understands what this site is about.  A single CTA for a user to get started on joining.

The vision of TFAV with 3

sections for the information a user might need.

Evidence based facts to bring impact to a user.

Increasing membership to meetings.

Stakeholder approval

A walk-through readout with the stakeholders was final step for this project.  We walked through every screener any questions or reasons why that design was chosen.  Stakeholders were all in an agreement with the layout of information and stated they would place more personal images for the website.  The hi-fidelity mockups are in the stakeholders hands.  Once they find the right developer, then the hard work has paid off.

Very exciting to se your work live.  That never gets old as a UX Researcher and Designer!

Key Takeaways

  • Working with the stakeholder throughout the process.  Communicating and making sure everyone was on the same page.

  • Talking with users to build personas and understand their frustrations and needs.  To keep them in the forefront at all times throughout the project.

  • Sometimes it is difficult to find enough users.

  • Timeline can catch up on you, when you have to go backwards on the research.

  • Having an amazing partner, David, helps with the frustrations when things don't go the way you vision!
